Off Somewhere Sunny!
Maxence and I are leaving tonight for ten days of well deserved vacation in the Seychelles islands. The plan is to lie on the beach, sleep till noon, read under coconut trees, swim in lagoons, walk in the natural parks, search for geckos, scuba dive, marvel at the multicolored fish, and sip on drinks with chunks of exotic fruit perched on the rim of the glass.
I probably won't be posting until we get back, but I heard that the Seychelles serve the best créole cuisine of the Indian Ocean, so stay tuned for my take on that!
And thanks to this website for the picture, which I borrowed until we bring back our own...

10 days? Ack! While Deb's off and remodeling her new kitchen, and you're off to some gorgeous tropical sunny place (how dare you?) I am here alone, wondering what to cook. Sigh. All right, I resign myself to defeat and will just keep diligently posting until you all get back.

Monkey - the cocktails we had turned out to be decorated not only with chunks of fruit, sugar on the rim and little umbrellas, but also gorgeous fresh tropical flowers! As beautiful as they were delicious...
Posted by clotilde on November 24, 2003 9:11 AMIt may be five years after you were in the Seychelles, but I feel the need to tell you that the bats you ate were listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN's Red List and are likely to be upgraded to Endangered in a few years. They are not farmed, and they have long lives producing just one offspring each year, so populations under attack are decimated pretty rapidly. As foodies, I would think you might make some effort to consider the impacts of what you are eating. Fruit bats aid in seed dispersal and are responsible for maintaining some native fruiting plant populations. In addition, people who ate bats on Guam Island in the Pacific tended to get ALS-parkinsonism dementia complex (a brain disease), so health-wise bat-gastronomy isn't a great idea either.
