Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris

Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris

It is with unmitigated joy that I announce the release of my new book today!

Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris is a book on Paris restaurants and food shops, in which I share recommendations for my favorite spots -- everything from neo bistros and salons de thé to bakeries, outdoor markets, wine shops, and much, much more, as they say -- plus all you need to know to navigate the City of Light and Good Food, plus a dozen recipes.

The book is coming out in North America initially (pending the sale of foreign rights, it will be available as an import elsewhere), and I am about to leave on a book tour to promote it -- please view the full list of booksigning events and see if you can come and say hi.

You can read more about the book, including reviews and excerpts, on the mini-site I've set up, and you should of course feel free to order your very own copy -- no, really.

I've only just received finished copies myself, and although it is hardly surprising for a young mother to fawn over her newborn, I am particularly pleased with how this book turned out -- the way it fits snugly in my hands, the slight grain of the cover, the chic layout, the color photos, and the rounded corners (rounded corners! you know you love them!). So pleased, in fact, that I've been tempted to keep a copy under my pillow, but Maxence said no.

The perpetual challenge for books that give real life recommendations is that real life stuff tends to shift and change over time. Thankfully, by the power and grace of the Internet, I will be able to maintain a list of updates, corrections, and bonus addresses on the above-mentioned mini-site -- there's even a "print before you go!" version to slip in the book and take with you to Paris.

[And head over to Travelocity's blog The Window Seat to read the guest post I wrote today.]

Never miss a recipe!

Congrats on your new book! I admit I did notice the rounded corners ;) but the size - it looks like a nice size to travel with, which is important! I look forward to hearing-seeing more.

oh, the book looks so good! I'm in paris for the next 1.5 months and it would be perfect if i could get my hands on a copy of the book now.. :( looks like it'll have to wait till the next time then!

Posted by Tiffany on April 22, 2008 10:21 AM

I can't wait to buy it!

Posted by Lucy V on April 22, 2008 10:29 AM

Bravo! And Clotilde I'm sure Maxence was only joking...the sweet joy of rounded corners...

Posted by Joan on April 22, 2008 10:52 AM

Well done, you! It seems like the perfect size for my handbag. I look forward to seeing it on the shelves in the UK and perhaps to a trip on the Eurostar...

So excited about your new book, Clotilde! I wonder if they will be carrying it in the American bookshops in Paris? Will have to look into it...

Félicitations and enjoy your book tour! I'm sure you'll bring back lots of great memories and yummy goods, as always! Biz.

bravo clotilde ! i can't wait to buy it. and I agree coquelicot is definitely one of the best bakeries in paris.. God I miss bread!!

Posted by est on April 22, 2008 1:13 PM

Clotilde
Congratulations...
But why do you never tour Canada?
I am sure I am not the only Canadian reader...
All the best

Posted by R.J. on April 22, 2008 1:24 PM

Alice - English-language bookstores will carry the book -- it may take a couple of weeks for it to cross the ocean, but you can certainly call your favorite bookshop and reserve a copy.

R.J. - I would have loved to include Canadian cities in the tour, but Random House Canada does not bring in very many authors, and it wasn't possible this time.

Posted by clotilde on April 22, 2008 1:36 PM

Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby, Clotilde! Aaaaah, look at the cute rounded corners!

You're right, R.J., you're not the only Canadian reader. Maybe we should start harassing Random House Canada... "WE WANT CLOTILDE! WE WANT CLOTILDE! WE WANT CLOTILDE!"

Posted by Deleilan on April 22, 2008 2:00 PM

Oooh, the rounded corners! I love those. I can't wait to read this - and return to Paris to sample your recommendations.

Posted by radish on April 22, 2008 2:18 PM

Oh I can't wait to get hold of a copy in the UK. I loved your first book and this sounds so good too.

Posted by George on April 22, 2008 3:20 PM

Felicitations. Can't wait to buy a copy. I'll see you in NYC!

Posted by carrie on April 22, 2008 3:32 PM

Congrats on the book!! And enjoy the book tour - I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures.

Now, off to Amazon UK to see if I can scare up a copy...

Posted by Rachel on April 22, 2008 4:10 PM

Congratulations Clotilde! No one I know works harder or deserves it more.

On the downside, I will be spending way less time on your moblog searching for restaurants.

Posted by Braden on April 22, 2008 4:11 PM

Yay! Unfortunately, I can't afford the book right now, but hopefully I will get it before I'm living in France again. I did finally get C&Z and I love it :-)

Posted by Judith on April 22, 2008 4:38 PM

Congratulations on the new book Clotilde.

Posted by barbara on April 22, 2008 4:52 PM

Clotilde:

You are a successful food writer with published books, a highly visited blog and fans in many countries. Due to your greatness, Maxence is not allowed to tell you not to put your book under your pillow!

Posted by vegoftheweek on April 22, 2008 5:18 PM

Congratulations! I love your original cookbook and was excited to hear about the new one. I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival in my mailbox. My family and I have rented an apartment on rue Caulaincourt this summer & are sure your book is going to be an immense asset for out trip!

Posted by Susan on April 22, 2008 5:57 PM

congrats! i love the design of the book, it's adorable.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: i want to be you.

Posted by michelle @ TNS on April 22, 2008 5:58 PM

Congratulations! I would love to go to France someday and will definitely check out your book when I get the chance.

Posted by Andy on April 22, 2008 8:20 PM

Congratulations! Once I helped compile "beauty maps" for the city of San Francisco, which showed where all the best makeup stores, hair salons, and more were. And it nearly killed me!

I can't imagine doing a whole book!

Posted by The Window Seat on April 22, 2008 8:46 PM

Congratulations, Clotilde! I can't wait to get my hands on your new book. My parents are embarking on an European journey in May and I think I will reluctantly lend the book to them. So if you see a a pair of Asian middle-aged adults trotting around Montmartre with your book in hand... that may very well be my parents!

Posted by amanda on April 22, 2008 9:00 PM

Congratulations! I always enjoy your great recipes and witty comments.

...but...

What with the bistro table and chairs and the baguette sticking out from the bag?

Why not go all the way with the clichés? A striped shirt, a beret, a mime getting off a DS in the background would have been a perfect addition...

Posted by Hajnal on April 22, 2008 9:10 PM

Congratulations, Clotilde.

One day I shall get to Paris again....

Posted by Mrs Redboots on April 22, 2008 9:20 PM

Clotilde, the book looks phenomenal. Contrary to the old saying, books are judged by their covers and the presentation is really fantastic!

I can't believe you'll be reading at one of my favorite bookstores, in the town where I spent the first 18 years of my life. At Bookshop Santa Cruz! The attached café is actually called Chocolat (quelle surprise!) and if you get the chance to eat there please check out their chicken soup. If you would like any other suggestions for places to visit or things to do, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. I'm currently in school in New Orleans and will be mid finals on may 6th but if you'd like a guide my mom (une parisienne) might be able to help out while you're in town -

also, check out lulu carpenter's at the end of pacific avenue (near the clocktower) near the Bookshop for great tea and coffee. My favorite in town!

Posted by d'Auria on April 22, 2008 9:26 PM

I cannot wait to listen to you speak and watch you sign my book when you are in los angeles!

bienvenue & bon chance on the book signing!

Posted by Liz on April 22, 2008 10:20 PM

So exciting. I will have to grab a copy.

I also saw your article in this month's bon appetit. Congrats all around!

Posted by Paige on April 22, 2008 11:09 PM

Congrats! I hope you'll have a chance to have some edible adventures here in the states. If you need any advice, feel free to ask.

Posted by Aaron Kagan on April 22, 2008 11:31 PM

Félicitations Clotilde! I live in Paris and I am looking forward to have your book, but I did not understand if I will find it here in Paris in bookstores or not yet... Thank you and congratulations - sincerely!

Posted by Kass on April 22, 2008 11:35 PM

Having pre-ordered a copy of your book on amazon.com a week in advance, I could not have been more excited today when I came home and found a beautiful brand-new copy on my doorstep! It's great so far. Congratulations and keep up the good work! =D

Maintaining the integrity of the book online is such a good thing to do!

Posted by gingerpale on April 23, 2008 12:22 AM

Thank you all for your well wishes.

Amanda - I will look out for your parents!

Hajnal - I'm not sure how much you know about book publishing, but the key aspect in picking a cover photo is that it must send a clear, instantaneously readable message to the person who walks past it at the bookstore and glances at it for a fraction of a second. Hence the café terrace that says "Paris," the shopping bag (notice that it's not just any old baguette, but a multigrain baguette des prés from my corner bakery), and the cake box (from Arnaud Larher) on the table.

d'Auria - Thanks for the Santa Cruz rec's! I haven't been in years, and I'm excited to go back.

Kass - The book will be sold at English-language bookstores in Paris (such as Brentano's, WHSmith, Shakespeare & Co., The Red Wheelbarrow...) but it may take a couple of weeks before it's available. If you'd like a copy, I suggest you call your favorite bookshop and ask them to hold one for you.

Posted by clotilde on April 23, 2008 1:13 AM

So, the book arrived today in an amazon box after waiting for the release for a couple of months. I am halfway through it already and have found everything extremely helpful and descriptive. I am looking forward to using it during my stay in Paris this summer. Thanks, Clotilde.

Posted by Leah on April 23, 2008 2:35 AM

Excellent! Congratulations, it looks fantastic. I'll have to check it out when it reaches the US.

Posted by Nick on April 23, 2008 4:40 AM

TA-DAH! The long-awaited day has arrived. I pre-ordered 4 copies and Amazon has promised only a 4/28 delivery.

We hope to return to Paris [last visit Feb 2007] in early November and will appreciate your insights.

Bon voyage!

This one is going immediately in my Amazon.com shopping cart! Can't wait to visit "your" Paris (and I love the rounded corner design -- No more dog-eared, travel-worn corners!)

This book is on my list of must haves!

Posted by Eileen on April 23, 2008 2:57 PM

Hi Clotilde - By chance, I was browsing in a bookstore last Sunday the 20th, and was surprised to see your new book. I hadn't known it was out yet. Of course, I snatched it up immediately.

I've been perusing it's pages for the past few days and am pleased to see many restaurants and shops that I'd never heard of before. I've visited Paris six times, so it's refreshing to see so many new possibilities. I also like the little sections on budget dining, wines, and even table manners.

The book is sure to become my bible on my future trips to Paris. My only complaint is that I can not go now.

Elizabeth

In exactly one month, I am moving from Berkeley Calif. to Paris for a year! At first I was going to wait until I got to France to buy the book, but after reading all these posts I don't think I can wait that long.

Congratulations!

congrats - am I still looking forward to seeing you soon? J'espere...

Clotilde,

We are so sorry to miss your appearances in San Francisco and Santa Cruz because we are on vacation. That's the bad news. But the good news is that we are in Paris, and based on your recommendation had dinner at Breizh tonight. It was wonderful! The owner (?) asked how we had found out about the restaurant, and we mentioned you and your book. He seemed to know what we were talking about. We look forward to finding out what we missed when we return home, and have the opportunity to read the book we ordered through Amazon.

Warmly,
Dot and Bob Allen

Posted by Dot Allen on April 24, 2008 9:54 PM

wowwwww!! Congratulations Clotilde!

Posted by Tamami on April 25, 2008 1:46 AM

Clotilde, I just bought the book today and LOVE IT!!! I leave CA for Paris two weeks from today, just for the purpose of walking the city for three days and eating well. Your book makes me that much more impatient for my trip, and makes me feel prepared. Perhaps I will make it to your LA book signing the day before I leave!

Thank you so much for this beautiful and useful work.

Posted by lisa c on April 25, 2008 5:52 AM

I was thrilled when a copy of your book arrived today (via amazon)! Now I just need tickets to Paris so I can eat and shop my way around town! I haven't been back for a number of years so I'm sure there are many changes since!
I'm sad that you're not making it back to Boston this time... and I will miss you in NYC by a couple of days! The weather should be nice this time of year, trees and flowers just starting to bloom!
Congrats on the book! I look forward to reading it (and hopefully using it sometime soon!)

Posted by Robin on April 25, 2008 8:11 AM

First-time poster here...I can attest to how lovely the book feels in one's hands, since I petted it fondly yesterday at my favorite independent bookstore in Washington, DC.

I have been reading your blog for a few years, but had never tried any of your recipes, until I bought your last book. Now I can't seem to stop! My husband is not complaining though. The new book couldn't have come at a better time, as we are planning a trip to Paris this summer.

Posted by Sara on April 25, 2008 4:32 PM

Congrats on your new book! I ahve to check it out!!!

Posted by LINA on April 26, 2008 4:09 AM

Congratulations Clotilde! Watching your progress has been an absolute joy. I can't wait to see this. My partner's parents live in France and we will be visiting soon so I'm looking forward to making the most of your book.

Posted by Helen on April 26, 2008 8:34 PM

I have just received it (pre-ordering on amazon is definitely great). It is even better than I've expected. It will be my best companion for gastronomic wandering in Paris. And...the rounded corners are lovely :-)

Posted by Atf on April 26, 2008 8:52 PM

Just got the book from amazon.com. Just wonderful- I cannot wait to come to Paris and use the guide. In the meantime, I will snuggle up and plan. Great job - again.

Posted by Robin on April 27, 2008 2:56 AM

I will definitely be ordering a copy. Maybe two.
Saw you on Diary of a Foodie. I love that show. It just ended--I really hope they shoot new episodes.

Couldn't be more thrilled for you, Clotilde!! Wishing you much continued happiness and success. My one disappointment is not being able to make it to one of your book signings........is there any way to purchase a signed copy via the Internet?
All the best,

Just ordered your new book on Amazon since Paris is the main stop in my summer holidays. Can't wait for your book to arrive!

Posted by Anouk Simons on May 3, 2008 12:11 PM

Clotilde, what fortuitous timing! My boyfriend and I are just planning our first trip to Paris and were so excited to get the book in the mail, crack it open, and find so many wonderful recommendations just down the street from the apartment we're renting in Montmartre! (I need to have kitchen access; it's imperative.) Along those lines, actually, I was wondering if you could help: at the very end of May, what special French farm products will be in season that I should be on the lookout for at the market? I think we'll try to go to Batignolles on Saturday, and I wonder if there's any particular delicacies, particularly things I may not have in America, that I should be sure to purchase and cook up in our rented kitchen? Thanks for your thoughts!

We bought a couple of copies of your book at Book Passages in Corte Madera on Sunday night. We're thrilled to have all the great info as we look forward to another trip to Paris!
Thank you!
