March 2010 Desktop Calendar

At the beginning of every month, I am offering C&Z readers a new wallpaper to apply on the desktop of your computer, with a food-related picture and a calendar of the current month.

Our calendar for March is a picture of a chèvre frais cendré — ash-coated fresh goat cheese — taken at a small market stall that was giving away sample slices.

Not everyone realizes that cheese is a seasonal product too, and that artisanal goat cheese can only be made between early spring and early fall, when the goats are lactating to feed their kids. (Fresh goat cheese sold outside of that time period is usually made from frozen milk.)

So this month’s calendar is all about celebrating the arrival of the first rounds of fresh goat cheese. I hope you saved a little of that multigrain starter bread from last month’s calendar to go with it!

Happy New Year!

At the beginning of every month, I am offering C&Z readers a new wallpaper to apply on the desktop of your computer, with a food-related picture and a calendar of the current month.

Our calendar for January is a picture of lemon slices I dried in a dehydrator (see these posts on raw buckwheat granola and raw multiseed crackers to know more about my dehydrator episode). I made a big batch of these, and I am keeping them on hand in a jar, to add to stews, riz au lait, and herbal teas.

At the beginning of every month, I am offering C&Z readers a new wallpaper to apply on the desktop of your computer, with a food-related picture and a calendar of the current month.

Our calendar for December is a picture of chocolate clusters, arguably the easiest of homemade chocolate confections. These particular ones are made with crystallized ginger and chopped almonds, and if you’d like to make some during the holidays, the recipe is here.

November 2010 Desktop Calendar

At the beginning of every month, I am offering C&Z readers a new wallpaper to apply on the desktop of your computer, with a food-related picture and a calendar of the current month.

Our calendar for November is a picture of a kouign amann, the butter-rich, flaky, irresistibly caramelized confection from Brittany, and this particular one comes from Véronique Mauclerc’s excellent bakery near the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont (83 rue de Crimée in the 19th).

Kouign amann (the name simply means “butter cake” in Breton, and is pronounced more or less “kwin-ya-man”) is made a bit like puff pastry, by creating laminated layers of sweet dough and butter. I’ve never tried making it myself, but if I ever do, I will most likely follow the detailed recipe my friend David Lebovitz shared.
