I have put one together of sorts.

My sister was married last year, and because she already had her apartment kitted out, I didn't know what to buy.

I asked all the people invited to the wedding to send me a recipe for her, telling us why that recipe.
I had it all put together manually, but have since formed a company in Ireland to specialise in this sort of thing! I'll put on the web address if you are interested - and hope I don't offend everyone.

I presented it at the wedding, and it was really well recieved.
It truly is a masterpiece, and the best bit is - she does not need to be a masterchef to make the dishes in there - which she is not

In summary - I think that a good recipe or cookery book will address the needs of the users.

I have a collection of family recipes from my mother, grandmother, sister and friends. I try to keep a collection of my favorite recipes and food i love!!! Its a great resource to have and i am starting to have quite a collection!

I've compiled 3 family recipe collections to give as bridal shower gifts.

Everyone loved them and still talks about them and the wonderful recipes.

It is a bit time consuming but not that difficult.

For my family recipe book I asked my mother, sisters and brother for their favorite family recipes growing up and to also include some memories of childhood. They sent them via email so I could put them right into my computer. I usually put 2 recipes per page, separated them into categories and added a table of contents: a whole page for desserts and another page for everything else. I also emailed everyone and asked them to explain how my mother makes a pot of tea and included the directions (tea can be quite a production when we are all together). We love looking at that page and comparing responses. I printed the original on prety paper from the stationary store and gave it to my mother. Then I made 20 copies, put them in loose leaf binders and gave one each to my siblings and each of their children. Now everyone has a copy of the cherished family recipes. I refer to mine often.

Susan. I think that is the thing. I have a book like this of my family history but not recipes. if we all had this we would be on the way to eliminating so many social problems that arise from people 1- not knowing how to live but 2- not know how to look after themselves. You will not hear a bad word about feminism from me- for very real reasons- but for modern people I thin it has resulted in a generation of two of people who do not know the basics of looking after oneself. Does this make any sense?
If i had grown up with a family book of my family's traditional receipes i think i would have eaten so much better and learnt a lot about life from it too. I am serious. I think that knowing how to cook means that you know how to live- unless you are born with a 'silver chef' in your mouth.

I couldn't agree more, Georgia and Susan. I'm teaching my teenage sons how to choose good quality fruit and vegetables. It sounds kinda basic, but it's a good 'skill' to have. They can both already cook and know their way around the frozen food section of the supermarket, but I want to expand that knowledge so they can cook 'from scratch'.
