Very last minute, my boyfriend and I are meeting in SF on 13 July to see a play -- where to eat in theater district? (Union Square, more or less) -- I'd like to give him a nice dinner, but there are difficulties:

--We only have 90 minutes or so (curtain at
--Italian and Mexican usually don't work because he can't eat cheese
--He's not really into spicy (no Indian, sob...)
--We've had so much sushi lately we want something different
--Canteen (my first choice) is unavailable

Any help greatly appreciated!

Here's a BRILLIANT French resto just up the street from The Geary and Curran theatres - it's not terrifically expensive - but it IS terrifically GREAT!

There is also David's Jewish Delicatessen - 474 Geary - right across the street from the theaters - and very yummy. It is a real Jewish Deli with a lot of comfort food - meat loaf, matzo ball soup, brisket etc. It is quick to get in and out of. No website, though.

You might try Kuleto's. It's at 221 Powell, below Geary and just down the street from the St. Francis Hotel. As a theater district restaurant, they're accustomed to theater-going clients who need to make the curtain. I've seen so-so reviews of this restaurant, but I've never been disappointed. Their website is www.kuletos.com. (Sorry, I probably didn't do that as a link properly, but you can do it on your own...)

Yes, yes, I second Kuleto's - just wonderful food! It slipped my mind, but it's one of our faves!

Grand Cafe is in the Hotel Monaco. I've only been once, but had an unforgettable meal!

I third Donna's and Georgia's recommendations. If you can't get a table, there's La Scene Cafe & Bar, a California Cuisine resto, at 490 Geary; tel. 415 292-6430.
Too bad about Canteen. It fills up fast as seating is very limited. He also serves great breakfasts. I'm lucky to live just a block and a half away. Enjoy your evening!
