Has anyone been to Sault Ste. Marie, MI? My days in Seattle appear. . . numbered. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

Oh god Erin, sorry to hear your stay in your beloved northwest is going to be so brief! On the other hand, as far as Phil's career goes--I suppose (and hope) this is a case of "no pain, no gain". This move should really give you guys brownie points with the service! It is a beautiful part of the world (if it is like the Canadian equivalent--Sault St. Marie, Ontario) but I'm thinking you'll be bringing a culinary breath of fresh air with you! _________________ Vivant Linguae Mortuae!! |

It will be a huge step forward if we go. Actually, it's a huge step forward even if we are able to stay. The man with the plan said we'd be staying here and then pulled the rug out. Now there is only a tiny chance we'll be staying.
On the bright side, I knew it bordered Canada, but I didn't realise it bordered Ontario! Maybe they'll let me live on the Canadian side. If we end up there I will definitely have to visit Ottawa and a certain C&Zer who lives there. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

That would be wonderful! I've never been to Toronto. I only know it as the city Hollywood likes to use as fake Seattle. . .it doesn't work. If we go I'll be spending a lot of time in Canada I think. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

David, you'll have to invite Erin around so she can see you cook in your spangly corset! That will put a smile on her face.
Erin, good luck whatever happens. ... at least you have that ice cream to go with you, that should help. _________________ Confusion comes fitted as standard. |

We visited the area last year. We stayed at a great B&B on the Canadian side so let me know if you are looking for a place to stay during house hunting if you go. We enjoyed the Canadian side, but if you are going to work on the US side, keep in the mind the line across the river and the border can get really, really long. If it was my commute, I don't think I'd want to add up to 30 minutes each way for customs.
Our favorite thing in the area was actually Mackinac Island, which is maybe 45 minutes south, plus a ferry ride. _________________ Chocolate Gift Baskets | Chocolate Covered Oreos |

| It's a beautiful area. I don't remember much aside from the very Michigan-ness of it...and my grandpa used to call it "Sault Santa Maria". Mackinac on tandem bicycle is a must. |

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. We will be living on the U.S. side, my husbands employers would not look very kindly on us living in another country. I have already tested those waters. Still no word, but hopefully they won't keep us hanging much longer. Last time we were supposed to find out in December and didn't find out until March. Hopefully a higher rank will aide in avoiding this.
Is it true they have a large population of bears? _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

| Yes! Black bears. The local dump was actually a tourist trap - people would go there & park just to watch the bears eating trash. Not sure how healthy that is for the bears... |

I can't tell you about eating in Sault Ste. Marie as it is a number of years since I have been there. It is still quite rural, though, as far as I know, so don't expect to find a WHole Foods Market. However, the countryside around there is breathtakingly beautiful, which may make up for the isolation. Why is your husband being transferred?

SBJ, awwohh! I have an irrational fear of coming face to face with a bear. Phil has been in that situation and believes I need to calm down. I believe he is mistaken.
Dory, He advanced in rank and they usually move the newly promoted. It is good to know that it is so beautiful there, I am the type of person who can spend hours just staring at the landscape. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

Ah Erin! Bears---especially little fat black bears are one of the cuter guys out in the woods. Now a grizzly i'd be wary of, but them thar little black 'uns barely ever weigh in at more'n 400 lbs! And I doubt there are any grizzlies in WI! Just don't come between Mom and here young'uns! _________________ Vivant Linguae Mortuae!! |

That's good to know. If we move there I'll be the one walking around with an airhorn.
When Phil lived in Alaska he encountered a grizzly while on a bike ride that took him past a salmon hatchery. Luckily he had just read a pamphlet on the subject and began yelling and flailing his arms. Thankfully, the bear took off.
Thanks for the link. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."
