What would be an appropriate substitute for fromage blanc? Options include sour cream, Greek yoghurt, creme fraiche.
Has anyone tracked it down in Perth, Australia?
Many thanks. |

Hi Libby,
I would say the closest equivalent would be Greek-style yogurt, in terms of texture and fat content.
If by any chance you can find quark, it is the German cousin of fromage blanc. It's somewhat stiffer, though, so it needs to be thinned with a little milk.
And on an unrelated note, I wish I could teleport myself to an outdoor table at Little Creatures!

For the most part, yes, greek yogurt is probably the best substitute for fromage blanc. However, I have seen some rather unusual substitutions for an assortment of items. Believe it or not, I onced substituted fromage blanc with mushed brie cheese. The consistency was somewhat similar, but far more buttery and solid. In short, if you don't want something butter, don't stick with it. If you want to experiment, give it a shot. _________________ I wish I knew those cold stone hours . . . Clotilde, I just had a Pipsqueak Best Cider from the Little Creatures brewery last night. But here in Adelaide, sadly not at one of their outside tables.

Well, I used Greek yoghurt and the recipe worked out fine. Thanks.
Clothilde, I had dinner at Little Creatures with friends from work last night. We had to be inside though, as it's winter here and a tad cold to be outside in Fremantle at night. |
