If the cooks didn't share recipes, then we'd have to create them from scratch by experimenting. Either that or we'd get bored cooking repeated items. Sure it would take longer to "evolve" new recipes, but I suspect we'd all invent new recipes on our own. Just like Darwinian Evolution.

Sharing recipes is like genetic engineering, i.e., we're speeding up the evolutionary process.
