This came along just as I am, coincidentally, trying to wipe out a stand of creeping bamboo that seemed to come out of nowhere a couple years ago and is now threatening to take over a whole part of my landscape! http://joi.ito.com/archives/2005/05/02/takenoko.html
Anyway, since I've dug up the yards and yards of runners, these shoots (looking exactly like the photos on the site) have started popping up. I instictively tried one of them when I first popped it off at ground level. It wasn't bad.
I guess it's my karmic reward for a future of back-breaking work.
Has anyone ever heard, speaking of unexpected bounty from the landscape, of harvesting garden snails? I am told that if you collect them and feed them on cornmeal for something approaching a week, they're ready to be steamed or sauteed.
Personally, the shells look identical to snails I've ordered in restaurants, but I'd like a little more information before I get that brave. Perhaps, I'll have my own episode of "Steve, DON'T Eat That!"!

I'd cook them with dandelions and wild onions and wild parsley.
But, I'll eat anything, so don't follow me blindly on this one.
They do look as good as parsley roots and dandelion roots, which I do cook, eat, and enjoy. _________________ ' She says, 'I am the glamorous type.' I said, 'So what?'
