Here's a little tidbit of sports history for our friends in the magical land of OZ!

US was beaten by the Czech team. Shocking.

Well, at least the US is actually IN the World Cup. The Israeli national team was last observed in an actual world cup match in 1970 (I think). If I remember correctly, they made it past the first round, but back then if elimination games were tied after overtime, they would do a coin toss to decide the winner.
Our guys lost.
(p.s., I really don't like soccer, or football, or futbol, or whatever you wish to call it. But enjoy the games, all you fans out there!) |

How good was that Oz/Japan game? Well the last 10 minutes.
I was working and kept sneaking in to watch snippets of it on patients' TVs, but gave up when Oz was down 1-nil, then it all happened when I was actually busy doing some work!

My friend did a little dance, and promises/threatens streaking if they go all the way. He is from Taiwan, an American but truely believes he is an Aussie at heart. Needless to say Australia is where we have put all our football hopes. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

I thought my husband was going to take off during those last eight minutes (and I was slightly concerned that the joyful yelling would wake the neighbours up, but there again they were probably doing the same thing!!) Mind you, I was hardly quiet as a mouse myself.
Apparently he's never seen me as stressed as during the England game on Friday. Hee. I have to say, I'm thoroughly enjoying the World Cup.
On a food-related World Cup note, we're having several World Cup parties where I'll be serving food from the nations playing (little things - it'll be late at night here!). First up will be the next England game. I'm making mini Yorkshire puddings stuffed with rare roast beef and horseradish mayo, mini cones of fish and chips, mini bubble and squeak patties with crispy bacon, smoked salmon with brown bread and butter, mini scones with jam and cream and also serving some English cheeses.
Yes, everyone has the next day off! I have a few of these coming up so I think I'll be checking back in for some help with ideas. |

Hi Vickie, here are a few ideas for when various teams play:
Germany - anything as long as it's a sausage
Poland - Ditto
Ecuador - Guinea Pig
Costa Rica - coffee flavoured anything
England - Jellied eels
Trinidad & Tobago - Chicken and rice with lots of music
Sweden - anything flavoured with herring
Paraguay - see Ecuador
Argentina - Falkland figs
Iran - pass, I can't deal with a fatwah
USA - Sorry, there's nothing left, they've eaten it all
There must be lots of others but I'd better go now, I've insulted enough people! _________________ Regards Alex

LOL
I was in Brisbane over Christmas/New Years with my family, staying with my Step-dad's family. My brother, sisters and I had heaps of fun sparring with our cousins over how to correctly pronounce words, what was NZ/Aussie etc |

Ah yes, that would almost qualify as a trans-Tasman sport. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom
