Can anyone recommend a Norwegian cookbook in English translation? I'm looking for something that covers 'home cooking' rather than any specialized area - perhaps an updated equivalent of my mother's forbidding-looking Stor Kokebok. So far I have only mastered the Norwegian for milk and sugar which won't get me very far in the kitchen. What I really want to tackle is 'Kylling med tomater' which sounds as if it involves murderous tomatoes but probably doesn't.
I don't know a thing about Norwegian cooking or Norwegian cookbooks, however, I did find a Norwegian section in my beloved and ancient Womans' Day Encyclopedia of Cookery. It has a few dozen recipes including Appetizers & Soups; Fish; Meat; Vegetables & Salads; Sauces; Breads & Pancakes; and Desserts, Cakes & Cookies.
Meat, I'm sorry to say, includes Reinsdyrsteik (Saddle of Reindeer) but not a single recipe for chicken.
I got my WDEofC at a used cookbook store. If you're interested in looking for it, Vol. 8 has the Norwegian food. Or, if you're exceedingly patient and want, I could pass along some of these recipes. Got a fax # you'd care to PM me? _________________ God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny. -- Garrison Keillor

I'm sorry and surprised to say that the sections on Danish, Finnish and Swedish cooking also lacked a single recipe for chicken! _________________ God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny. -- Garrison Keillor
