Any classical music experts?
Steve is tough to buy for. The one lead I have is that he's taken a new interest in classical music. He was in a youth symphony in his high school years at Eastman School and his knowledge of jazz is about encyclopedic. He was also a touring musician. So it's not like he's clueless.
Me, I just like what I like. ...and I am fairly clueless. Still, what I hope to find for him is a book that will outline the foundations of classical composers and periods that could suggest what he wants to explore and consider as he listens.
Anyone know of a great book to launch his new enthusiasm? Thanks so much for your help. _________________ God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny. -- Garrison Keillor |

Rainey, I know you're asking for book titles but I don't know any. However, I'd like to suggest my good friend Filippa Giordano if you're considering buying a CD. She's not a 100% classical singer but I find the 'poppy' influences are very much appreciated by people who are just starting to listen to classical music. But most importantly, she sings with a lot of passion which is heartwarming every time I hear her.
I bet others will come up with a good idea for a book for you! |

Rainey,
I am shooting off an email to my best friend, she is an opera singer with a degree in classical music. Something tells me she'll have an idea or two. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

Thank you both so much.
My impression is that it's pretty much orchestral music he's interested in. _________________ God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny. -- Garrison Keillor |
