...for January 7. Merry Christmas on the old Julian Calendar! For those of us who try to keep a few old family traditions, the holiday season draws to a close today (finally) with a toast of slivovitz--not for the faint of heart Rolling Eyes

And Slivovitz be it, it's the best ( I'm romanian born , so it's a little bit of tradition for me too, though we call it tzuica).

No more war, more slivovitz, vodka, tzuica or shnaps! LEHAIM!!! ( to life, in Hebrew)

slivovitz! I have a bottle in my spirits cabinet. There's some weird stuff there: charanda from Mexico, guaro from Costa Rica, ouzo from Greece, aquavit from Sweden, calvados from Normandy, schnapps from Germany and from Austria, some kind of fiery stuff from China that I'm afraid of, but tonight, I'll haul out the slivovitz and drink until I have to crawl to bed.

Now I understand why slivovitz is best taken in small doses. It doesn't mix particularly well with beer either. My wife was wondering why I was running around the house in a makeshift loin cloth, pretending that I was Romanian. in the neolithic age.
Is this the last of the holidays? please?

I'm really shocked that people still think that Neolithic culture and Romania don't go together. Check this out, from Wikipedia :
The Vinča culture was an early culture of Europe (between the 6th and the 3rd millennium BC), stretching around the course of Danube in Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Republic of Macedonia, although traces of it can be found all around the Balkans, parts of Central Europe and Asia Minor.
OK, maybe they weren't running around in loincloths drinking slivovitz 6-7,000 years ago, but that's artistic license. And I won't be running around in a loincloth drinking slivovitz tonight either.

Donna etal...the feast ended up being gloriously international: Swedish at the start (for the son-in-law) with glogg and gravlax, Italian-y in the middle with a fennel and garlic crusted pork roast, Frenchy-English at the end with a buche de noel, English Christmas cake, and multitudes of cookies and sweets. French champagne, French and American wines.

The "other" Christmas (January 7) was my grandmother's recipe for stuffed cabbage and homemade bread, a wonderful cabernet my brother brought straight from a great small winery, and--of course--slivovitz to toast the gathered family.

Time now to rest.

But I do wish we'd had somebody in a loin cloth around HERE! Maybe next year...CB, how's your social calendar? After that last post, I suspect it's filling up fast.
