I loved this movie so much, I saw it twice. Part of my loving it has to do with it reminding me of Downtown LA, which used to be 15 minutes away when I lived in Pasadena. Now that I live in San Diego, it's about 2 1/2 hours away. I've only been separated from Los Angeles for 3 weeks so far, but I really felt the separation anxiety after seeing this movie.
In addition to telling an original and entertaining story (an anti-love story if you will), the movie captures some of the most beautiful parts of Downtown LA. Downtown LA has a lot more character and history than people give it credit for. The very first Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Biltmore Hotel on Fifth and Olive. Scenes from Blade Runner were filmed in the Bradbury Building.
From certain high level office buildings, you can see rootop gardens belonging to exclusive apartments and hotels. Also, the city views at night are amazing (one of the unexpected perks of working late nights). The freeways and main streets look like arteries pumping with masses of headlights and brake lights. Also, nothing beats flying into LAX at night and seeing the entire city grid all lit up like Christmas.
On that note, are there any movies that bring you back to a certain place you don't (currently) live in but still love with all your heart?
(Anthony Mingella's Truly Madly Deeply also makes me wax poetic about London.) _________________ "Help! Help! I'm being repressed!" --- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
