Dear lakritz , shiker is of course in Yiddish, but like many many Yiddish words, it's of hebrew origin. "Shikor" simply means "drunk" in Hebrew. I didn't know the Toffte word, my Yiddish is much worse than my German,
but you are right again, Tov- means good in hebrew ( Mazal- luck).
I am also always puzzled by the many Yiddish words have penetrated the American language , words which are used by everybody, most of the people not even being aware of the origin of the word.
There were indeed many jewish communities in the Ruhr region, which might explain the "melange".
No Yiddish in berlin, I'll polish my Hoch Deutsch
No more war, more common words , more common language!

Yes, Essen has the most enormous synagogue in the city centre, so I always gathered there must have been a thriving Jewish community.

JustMe
I opened a Fetzer Merlot the other day and was very disappointed.
Hmm, I don't know what the Merlot is like but I can sort of understand your disappointment; when I tried the Cabernmet Sauvignon, I also didn't think it was quite up there with others in the same price range, not as full-bodied and/or smooth as I had expected. I think I tried to reflect that when I called it 'edgy'...
