Gosh you all are such a treat to know! So darned easy to share with!
Sarape---------------we've those creationist types as well, but nowhere near the number you have in your region. Fortunately some people do change---a friend of mine who was a Southern Baptist street preacher is now a devout Marxist! Canadians generally like their religion "lite" and quiet and private. _________________ Vivant Linguae Mortuae!! |

Simona Darling...methinks that the grouping of Baptists, or Australians, or golf players, or dancers, or scientists, or ....bear with me...a thread!...there would be extreme Baptists and at the same time liberal Baptists...extremes in all groups..
and how about those who appear extreme because they percieve THAT to be what they are SUPPOSED to be!....and what about gay and lesbian Baptists in the south....methinks they would keep an inner life...and perhaps those screaming so much...those fanatical homophobics...methinks perhaps a % of them are themselves not hetrosexual...subconsciously they have shrunk their sexuality so as not to have to confront it...lives pretending to be hetrosexual...
I know of 4 couples where, after many years of marriage, a spouse has left...declaring their homosexuality....a difficult and confronting time for many...
It will happen more and more...in Baptist marriages it will happen...
"Prayers for Bobby"....a book to read... _________________ "I've never accepted the external appearance of things as the whole truth. The world is much more elaborate than the nerves of our eye can tell us." - James Gleeson |

Simona, here's what the Southern Baptists--who broke off from the Northern Baptists in the early 1800s because they believed in slavery--say about themselves:
Southern Baptists take the Bible very seriously. They believe one ought to abide by the Ten Commandments. In a resolution released in 1998, Southern Baptists see all people as equal in God's eyes, but they say that the husband or man has authority in the household and he has a responsibility to protect his family. Therefore, the wife or woman ought to respect and love her husband and submit graciously to his demands. Southern Baptists have recently taken stands against issues such as homosexuality and abortion, but this has not come without objection from people outside and even inside the denomination. _________________ The goal is to fit it all in. |

One surprise for me upon moving to Alabama was the difference between religion and ethnicity. Down here in Dixie, it is all about religion. That's how you're defined.
Up north, it is all about ethnicity: Italians, Greeks, Polish, Jewish, Irish, German, Puerto-Rican, etc. People in the north often group like this.
Down here there are no ethnic conclaves. It is simply religion, barbecue, and college football. _________________ ' She says, 'I am the glamorous type.' I said, 'So what?' |

simona- Madame & Chicago Bear are sooo diplomatic. In re the Southern Baptists & American Taliban, let's just say that recently they've taken to being severely literal with the Bible. ...except for that New Testament passage that says "Judge not lest ye be judged." I haven't seen much evidence that that still appears in the Bibles they want to run the rest of our lives with. _________________ God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny. -- Garrison Keillor |

oh wadda thread!
in a few minutes am on an almost 3 hour drive to a funeral...so things godish and religionish a bit...in my mind..
Dave Allen, a gorgeous Irish comedian who lived and worked in Oz used to end his show with "Goodnight, Good Luck, and may your god go with you." .....I'd add also, your non-god...
for, whatever it is or isn't it simply IS....
so to life let's drink..
hugs especially today to all the readers...
and love to Ottawa in beach bucket loads... _________________ "I've never accepted the external appearance of things as the whole truth. The world is much more elaborate than the nerves of our eye can tell us." - James Gleeson |

Oh dear...didn't your mother ever tell you "never discuss religion (or politics) at the table?"
how'd we get here from there? that said, it's nice to see that the crowd I am hanging out with here is pretty liberal (oh-oh...am I gonna get flack for that?).
David's right: here in Canada we like our religion "lite" and quiet and private.
and in the words of madameshawshank: so to life let's drink.. Salud! _________________ Life is too short to drink cheap wine. |

David- I know you've been offered the best wedding present of all -- getting the day off to enjoy your own reception -- but take a look at this http://sevenspoons.kagato.net/
Have you ever seen anything more appealing and adorable?! Looks do-able too if you did the wonton skins ahead and kept them in airtight containers and mascerated the fruit ahead and held it for last minute assembly. AND put together 45 or so of those cute little lucite tubes for presentation... Did I mention how GRATEFUL I'm guessing you are to those treasured and talented friends?
Perhaps this will also serve as a peace offering to folks who think I went off the deep end of good taste. The ice wine and blessed silence is on me. _________________ God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny. -- Garrison Keillor |
