Desert Island Movies

Inspired by PestoMan's Culinary game and by Brokeback Mountain, let's think about movies we'd like to have with us when we're stranded on that mythical desert island. As a side note, I've spent plenty of time in deserts and on islands and I think the 2 are mutually exclusive. But anyway...

A few old favourites that I would, and do, happily watch over and over (and over and over!) again are

Love Actually
Blues Brothers
Shakespeare in Love
The Big Chill

and I'll add Brokeback Mountain - anything by Ang Lee for that matter - to the list.

Love your choices Judy (well 3 out of 4 anyway)! Me, I'd just have to have the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And for a classic I'd toss in Lawrence of Arabia, a desert movie for the desert, but one that swallows me up each viewing, oh, and Zulu, Michael Caine's first movie (I think) with all that lovely Welsh singing, well and blood of course.

1). "The Sound of Music", because on a desert island no one could hear me singing along. Also, since no one could see me I could add a little dance.

2). "Bend it Like Beckham", because not only does it depict the struggle between cultures in the life of a young Indian woman, but it has Johnathan Rhys-Meyers and I will need a little eye candy on a desert island.

3). "The Godfather 2", I was torn on this one because I love the first one almost as much, but the skills of one Robert De Niro tipped the scales in this direction.

4). "Pride and Prejudice", Not the new one but the A&E version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. Sure it doesn't really count because it is a mini series, but I love it so much. In my opinion it is the only version that really grasps the complexities of the work.

5). "Donnie Darko" and "Amelie" are going to have to duke it out for the last position.

This ought to prove I'm more than just a foodscigeek, I'm all kinds of geek.

1. Anyone who's picked up on my dog's name won't be suprised that I agree with David, and need the complete Lord of the Rings Extended versions trilogy (that just counts as one right?). I get to bring my Frodo to the desert island too right?

2. For contrast, the original Star Wars Trilogy, episodes 4-6, but not the new ones.

3. Kenneth Branagh's Henry V for culture.

4. I'd be undecided on a girl power movie, but since Erin picked Bend It Like Beckham, I'll go with Whale Rider.

5. Once again, Erin's choice of the A&E Pride and Prejudice is tempting, but since it's a desert island, I'll go with something a bit more titillating and take Secretary with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhall.

The Lord of the Ring's movie's do rock, are we allowed alternates?

I haven't seen "Whale Rider" yet, it's on my Netflix list. I can't wait to see it. I also agree with you about the Star Wars Trilogy I love the old ones, I am pretty lukewarm about the new. The breaking point for me was when they turned this strong woman into oe who needs smelling salts and a fainting couch. A very sad use on Natalie's amazing talent.

strange you should ask this judy, my son (4yo) is passionate about chitty chitty bang bang, at the moment. We downloaded the song and have noted in the counter that he has played it 288 times. needless to say he knows all the words and my daughter (2) bursts into the tear-jerker Truly Scrumptious with shirly temple professionalism. I would have to say that CCBB is a fantastic film and one wholely appropriate for another lonely night on the old desert island. Now i've forgotten how many films we should list 5 or 10. oh all right here's nine more:
A star is born- the one with barbara Streisand and Kris Kristoferson(double f?)

good challenge I will assume 10 movies like discs and dishes...

1 The Producers (the original with Zero Mostel) this movie is virtually perfect

2 Casablanca "round up the usual suspects"

3 Pulp Fiction some of the best dialog ever writtern

4 The Quiet man my Favorite Duke movie

5 Cool Hand Luke what a cast!!!

6 African Queen Hepburn and Borart...wow!!

7 Stalag 17 another great cast

8 Brassed Off British film about the closing of a coalmine and its brass band

9 The Magnificant 7 another super cast classic Japaneese film (7 Samuri) re set in old west

10 RoadHouse Yeah I know, its a guilty pleasure, but it is a pleasure and hell it's my island!!!!! besides "I thought this list would be bigger Wink

am a tired little chicken...we've just come from an openair (in a delightfully grassy patch by the Olympic Stadium) Gilbert and Sullivan concert...such fun...we picnickers sang along..

in a nanosecond I can hear Walter Matthau's voice..my how I've laughed at that film..laughter would be a good thing methinks..on a desert island!

The Shawshank Redemption ~ human spirit stuff...creative thinking...never give up...light at end of tunnel...choices...dignity...layers of story...the whole mix of it all..

the sheer joy of the thing! the grace of the dance ~ plus I could watch it over and over and become a tapdancer...although sand could be an issue Wink

How to choose!!! Shocked

Ok let's give it a try.... subject to much changing and swapping...

Shrek - for my silly movie. Every time we put any dvd on one of us says "Play the movie, play the movie ja" like the three little pigs.....

LOTR trilogy - yes, pretty good. Love the scenery and golem/smeagol (my friends dog is called Smeagol Foodscigeek, I think that movie has so many good pet names in it). And of course Foodscigeek's Frodo would have to be there along with Mick's Smeagol so I could have playfriends to watch it with.

The Castle is a good one - so many one liners "so what do you call this love?"

Master and Commander - not for Russel Crowe but rather for the fact that it is the most accurate depiction of sea battles etc ever produced by Hollywood.

Moulin Rouge - not for Nic, but so I can also sing along and not bug anyone else with the volume

Harry Potter box set - we all need a little magic in our lives

Star Wars - but no the modern ones.... I just cannot agree with a wimpy Lea and a soulful Luke.... he looks way too young and sulky for my liking.

Love the BBC version of Pride & Prej - Colin Firth will always be Mr Darcy. Did like the father (Mr Bennet) better in the new movie though.

CSI box set - love forensics

Actually I went to Studio 28 last tuesday and saw Memoires of a Geisha. I don't know what I like best, the theatre or seeing the movies.. the link is here

It is one of the oldest cinemas in Paris (think it might even be the oldest?). Absolutely gorgeous and filled with photos of different movie stars from its history who have visited there. Lucky me, it is my local and only a few seconds from my front door.
