Phil and I are ready to get traveling again, and are having trouble deciding where. I would like to know the places you have been in Europe that you absolutely loved andwhat made it so special?

While I really enjoyed Nimes, the ancient Rome aspects in particular and the wonderful hot dry climate of Provence I cast my vote for Dubrovnik simply because lately I have read a lot about the beauty of the city itself and of the amazing seafood available in the area---and I believe prices are very reasonable. If I had 2 votes i would have cast the second one for Sienna, and I somehow think Erin and Phil would easily be seduced by Italy!!!!

I have been to Dubrovnik about 25 years ago and it was one of the most stunning places I've ever been. And yes, the seafood is splendid! Laughing

I had some desolate moments during the Serbo-Croatian war looking at pictures of places I'd been in Dubrovnik that were now bullet pocked or destroyed. Crying or Very sad

It is definitely easy to get there from Italy, so perhaps you could make it another multi-country bonanza and hit Sienna and then Dubrovnik!

All that said - Nimes is also SO beautiful and you have the whole French coast to seduce you as well.

I would love to go to Dubrovnik - so that's where I cast my vote for your trip. Have fun deciding - they all sound like interesting places to visit.

We will be picking two places, so it is fun to see your alternates. Dubrovnik is way up there as I would like to reconnect with a friend I have known since I was 13 or 14. She and her older brother were sent to the States during the war. We stayed in touch for several years, but lost touch around 20 or so.
Oh David, you have learned my taste well. Sienna is somewhere I have wanted to visit for a long time. Did you spend much time there?

Oh dear, I wasn't there for long and it was many a moon ago but I have only warm memories of Italy. Hmmm, Sienna-Dubrovnik, yes quite doable I think!

i know this isn't on your list, erin, but i spent three weeks in hungary last year and LOVED it. budapest is an amazing, lusty, eccentric city with great food traditions, and then we went to the countryside and rented a little cottage with a woodstove andsauna for about 100 usd for the whole WEEK, and traipsed around, hiking, going to hotsprings and buying local pumpkinseed oil and wine. HEAVEN.

Oooh Anna,
That sounds great! We have discussed the possibility of Hungary in the next few years. Phil's grandmother is from there, other than that we don't know very much about it. Your description is wonderful, I think it is time to investigate Hungary a bit further.
