Chocolate Hazelnut Cake

Petit Gâteau Chocolat Noisette

I was out in the Marais area this afternoon, doing a little Christmas shopping (ok, a lot). And shopping, as you know, is a form of strenuous exercise. Especially ten days before Christmas. Especially in the Marais. That is why I entirely deserved a nutritious goûter, and I found just what I needed at a chocolate store called “Cacao et Chocolat”. I already knew that this Aztec-themed store sold excellent chocolates, ganaches and truffles, but I had never tried any of their pastries.

This little cake immediately caught my attention in the window, it looked so good. And you know how sometimes a pastry looks perfect, but when you bite into it, you’re a bit disappointed and find it somewhat lacking? It was not the case here, this cake was every bit as delicious as it looked. A small chocolate cake, of exactly the right ratio of crusty to moist, topped with crunchy caramelized hazelnuts and dusted with confectioner’s sugar. It had an Aztec-sounding name I forget, but I will make it my personal mission to go back, make a note of the name, and buy another one. I know, I know, don’t mention it. My sense of duty knows no bounds.

I would also love to reproduce this in the privacy of my own kitchen…

Hi Clotilde – Yum! That does sound good. I have yet to check out Cacao et Chocolat.

I just found your blog, thanks to your posting on the Julie/Julia Project. I moved to Paris earlier this year with my French boyfriend (software engineer) after living in San Francisco for a couple of years. So it seems that we have some things in common!

Quick question: any good ideas for a dish/dessert to make for Christmas to bring to my boyfriend’s parents’ house?

    Clotilde,

Based on the picture, description and name, it looks like an American brownie (though caramelized hazelnuts in place of walnuts sounds nice). Can you tell me how it differs?

    Just curious,
    Derrick

Amy – Indeed, we seem to be a mirror of each other! :) My first instinct is to point you to the Melt-in-your-mouth Chocolate Cake in the “Chocolate Is My Friend” category. It’s pretty easy to make, and a real crowd-pleaser…

Derrick – You’re right, it belongs to the same family of desserts! But, like you said, it’s hazelnuts in place of walnuts, they’re caramelized, they’re sprinkled on top instead of being mixed with the batter, and the cake is baked in an individual round mold, which allows you to have more of the crusty edge…

Ah, okay. I’ll have to remember that since I have little individual cake pans. Sounds yummy!

I would like an email address or web address for
Cacao et Chocolat in Paris. Can anyone help me with this. Thankyou

Bev – A quick search on Google turned this up : cacaochoc@club-internet.fr but it wasn’t on any official website, so I don’t guarantee the address is accurate or up-to-date. But you might give it a spin!

Thank you very much I will give it a go. I was hoping they had a website as I am sure they said they ship internationally when we visited last year.

I always visit Cacao et Chocolat when in Paris. You must have hot chocolate there if you’re there in an appropriate season. Enjoy the site.

This shop also happens to serve the most amazing hot chocolate! Not as rich and as thick as the one served in Angelina (near the tuileries. The Mont Blanc there is to die for), but as equally good. Highly recommended.
