Welcome to the new Chocolate & Zucchini!

Cucumber and nasturtium at In De Wulf.

Something looks different around here, no?

I am very excited to unveil the new version of Chocolate & Zucchini! I have been working on it for a good while with the extraordinary team over at cre8d, and it’s been wonderful to see it take shape over the months as we dreamed up my ideal C&Z.

So take a look around, see what you think. There is still a bit of fine-tuning to do, so I hope you will forgive any glitch you run into. And if you have a moment to report back and share thoughts, suggestions, and general feedback on the new site, I will be very interested to hear from you.

Here are a few quick notes on some of the new C&Z features :

Homepage grid

At the top of the homepage you will now find a grid that displays the latest post (largest image), plus the two most popular entries from the past two months (labeled “popular”), and three seasonal favorites that I will handpick and rotate regularly (labeled “favorites”). The purpose of this is to give you an at-a-glance view of what I’m up to when you visit.

Below the grid you’ll find the most recent posts, as before, in the more classic blog fashion.

Mobile- and tablet-friendly design

The new layout of Chocolate & Zucchini is designed to rearrange itself according to your screen size so you’ll get an optimal, full-featured experience whether you’re using a phone, tablet, or computer — it’s what’s called “responsive design”.

Comments via Disqus

The comments on C&Z are now handled through Disqus, which comes with lots of nifty features to enhance your commenting and reading experience. To comment, you will identify yourself using your credentials from the social media site of your choice, or create a (free) Disqus account. Many websites use this same service, so you can find all your comments in a single place, and get notified when your comments get a response, which saves you the effort of checking back.

If you have commented on Chocolate & Zucchini before, you can log in to Disqus and claim your past comments. It takes a minute and they will then appear with your pretty face next to them (go to Settings > Merging).

Recipe saving with Ziplist

The recipes on C&Z now have a “Save” button. This is hooked up to the Ziplist service, which allows you to collect and organize your favorite recipes online, and generate shopping lists. (Note: I am gradually migrating past recipes to the new recipe format that allows that.)

This is it for now, please do not hesitate to get in touch with any question or difficulty, and we will resume our regular programming in the next couple of days!

The site looks great! very smart choice going with a responsive design. Looking forward to the ziplist feature.

  • Just getting used to Disqus myself! Have’t added it yet to my blog, do you highly recommend it? What made you switch, if you don’t mind me asking?

    • You know, I’ve just started using it so my opinion isn’t yet formed. And I just switched from MovableType over to WordPress, so I never had the opportunity to try out the WP comment system.

  • Congratulations on your upgrade. Chocolate & Zucchini is literally an obsession of ours over at Travel&Lust! ;) Love how the pages look on our tablets and looking forward to copy and pasting some of your recipes! BTW, Amazing Instagram!

  • Looks FANTASTIC Clotilde :)

Merged – and the weekend has just started! What a lot of work you and cre8d have done to roll this out so well.

  • Stella_L

Congratulations on your new site, it looks great! I’ve been waiting for it since I participated in your survey (can’t remember when was that but seems a long time ago), so I’m happy it’s finally here :)

    • Thank you, Stella, it does feel like it was eons ago, but the survey was super helpful to guide the project. Thank you again for participating!

  • Tess @ Tips on Healthy Living

I really love your re-design! It looks amazing! Many blogs and websites are moving towards this type of design, and I think it’s smart. It’s much more user-friendly!

    • Thanks, Tess, user-friendliness was definitely at the forefront of our minds.

All is in good taste…congratulations Clotilde! :)

  • Carole D.

Love the site and the new features – it’s clean, clear, bright, very attractive and user friendly! One comment: I’m not an instagram user, but found the eye candy on the right too appealing to ignore, clicked on the instagram images to learn more about them – then found no way to go back to the webpage. Am I missing something – or is there a way to build in a link or back arrow to get you back to where you started? Great new look, Clotilde

    • Thank you Carole! Instagram is indeed a separate website so I can’t change their layout, but you can always use your browser’s “Back” button to return to the site when you’re done, or you can open it in a new tab as well.

  • Linda

Gorgeous; even more bright and lively. I love it.

  • Loren at Felix Doolittle

I love the new site, Clotilde!! I know how much time, thought, and hard work it takes to bring a new site to fruition. You’ve done it, and beautifully! I’m raising my glass of tea to you in celebration of this enormous achievement!!! Hopefully, one day I’ll have the pleasure to clink glasses with you personally!

    • Thank you Loren, I’m especially pleased to hear that coming from you, a person with such great taste. :)

  • Pat Nyswonger (Pat and Dahn)

Beautiful site design, very clean and user friendly too

  • Yvonne C.

Hi Clotilde, the website looks great, except there is one thing I do miss. I really liked being able to browse your recipes just by looking at a list. Now each recipe is shown as a picture and some categories are several pages long so it takes longer to browse, especially on my cell phone when I want to find some quick inspiration for dinner. It was nice to have all the recipes as one giant list on one page that I could just scroll up and down.

    • Thanks, Yvonne. It shouldn’t be too hard to reinstate that list, I’ll look into it!

      • Yvonne C.

        Great, thanks so much!!

  • Hello Clotilde! Many congratulations on your new website design!! What a delightful surprise when I clicked to visit your site! It is a lot more modern/ contemporary! Also feels interactive. The tick-box on the recipe is what I’m most jealous about!! :) And I like the new logo too!!! – It makes me wonder maybe it’s time I should look into mine too…! – Anyway, hope all is well!!!! Love, T xx

    • Thank you very much, Tamami, I’m so pleased you like it! And I heart the check boxes also. :) The idea was borrowed from the Martha Stewart website. And yes, the logo will always take you back to the homepage.
